Abstract
The overall objective of the OMNIBUS project was to develop an ultrasonic tool to monitor the rock barrier at potential geological radioactive waste disposal sites, in order to provide information on the stability of the rock mass through the location and quantification of induced crack damage.
The project has resulted in the development and testing of an innovative and unique data-acquisition system for ultrasonic survey and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring in both soft-rock (e.g. argillite) and hard-rock (e.g. granite) sites. The developed data-acquisition system includes an integrated hardware and software package, and has been successfully tested at an in situ experiment where an argillite layer was targeted. To maximise the potential for this technology it is important that the resulting survey data can be interpreted in terms of the location, extent, amount and density of induced crack damage, and hence be useful to engineers on site. The project has developed an a
