Applied
Seismology Consultants (ASC) was formed in 1997 by former research
staff of Professor Paul Young’s Keele University research group, UK.
Paul has since become Chair of Earth Sciences at Liverpool University,
UK, and is presently Director of the Lassonde Institute for Engineering
Geoscience at the University of Toronto. He is the Chief Scientific
Advisor and Senior Consultant to ASC.

Paul had started
the Engineering Seismology Laboratory at Queen’s University in 1984 and
performed innovative research and development of microseismic
instrumentation and software used to address the issue of rockbursts in
Canada. This resulted in commercial Queen’s Microseismic monitoring
Systems (QMS) being produced, and over 10 of these systems being
installed in mines across the country. Paul moved his research to the
UK in 1993 and started the Applied Seismology Laboratory at Keele and
then Liverpool Universities. The mine-monitoring market was developed
in Canada by Engineering Seismology Group Canada Inc. (ESG),
started by former staff of Paul’s Queen’s University research group.

In the UK, Paul
specialized in researching the use of seismic monitoring in
petroleum-field applications and in developing higher-frequency
techniques for laboratory rock-failure testing and for monitoring
critical engineered structures. Since ASC’s creation in 1997 we have
continued to develop these techniques into our range of services and
products and now work with organisations worldwide. We are involved in
multi-national research projects working at the forefront of our
science and collaborating closely with our clients and contacts to
develop new and innovative techniques and products. Our flagship InSite
software is now used by many international organizations for their
in-house processing and management of seismic data.
