The Mechanism Module applies a source mechanism analysis using a Moment Tensor inversion of waveform amplitudes.
The Moment Tensor is decomposed into percentage isotropic, double-couple and CLVD (compensated-linear-vector-dipole) components, along with orientations of the fault plane solution.
A deviatoric (T) and isotropic (k) representation, and an error analysis, are also included in the method.
The ‘Mechanism Visualiser’ displays the source mechanism results. The P-wave radiation pattern and fault-plane solution for an individual event are displayed on a lower-hemisphere (“beach-ball”) plot.
Links between the Mechanism and Waveform modules allow the user to switch easily during processing.
A T-k diagram displays mechanisms from all events so that distributions of event types can be analysed. Mechanism error ellipses can be plotted on the diagram so as to visualise uncertainties in the data set.
